Systems King
This MNC vendor not only topped desktop PCs decisively, but outshone
rivals for the top honors in the system segment.
While India’s software exports crossed 60% growth, Compaq India grew
even faster than that. It topped the PC charts, beating HCL and leaving
other MNCs far behind. In PC servers too, it was on top, with a quarter of
the market by units, winning key accounts like the postal department,
United India Insurance and TCIL. Compaq unseated last year winner, HCL
Infosystems, as it raced past all the other rival system vendors. With a
system revenue of over Rs1500 crore, it way ahead of its nearest rival HCL
Infosystems Rs870 crore systems business. Thanks to the Bangalore plant
rolling out 25000 desktops monthly, building a strong channel network with
over 300 retail stores, strong SI partnerships and increased focused on
the services has helped Compaq to notch the huge systems numbers. Compaq
managed to show gains in all segments of the system business like PC, Unix
servers, PC servers and the high end server fault-tolerant Himalaya
mainframes, thanks to big upgrades at the BSE and CSE stock exchanges and
other banking customers, including SBI, ICICI and HDFC. Will the run
continue? While slowdown is having its effects, but Compaq bigger
challenge would be to assure its customers of seamless transition and
support of the intended move of its unix servers from Alpha to Itanium.
