Efficient channel management and high brand promotion for the home segment saw this MNC brand top the desktop charts in India. It recovered from previous year's not-so-well performance and closed its books for financial year 2000-01 with PC volumes of over 150,000 units.

All this thanks its aggressive tactics-it opened one retail stores every three days and shipped six PCs every hour. The company increased penetration to over 350 retail outlets covering even smaller Indian towns. Other strategies like innovative product design like the Presario color PCs and iPAQ legacy-free desktops helped in raising its value in the home segment to become more than H-P's and HCL's combined value.

The result was there for everybody to see in terms of its volume growth. DATAQUEST salutes this spirit of competitiveness and confers DQ Top 20 award for Top PC vendor on Compaq India.

In FY 1999-00, Compaq sold 79,484 units way below HCL’s 101,500 units. However within a year Compaq has closed the gap and outclassed HCL in terms of units sold. In FY2000-01, Compaq was crowed the new king of PC by selling over 150,000 units and just over 2000 units ahead of HCL. A razor finish but Compaq beat HCL to the finishing line. The company has to thanks its aggressive tactics like retail stores opened every three days and six PCs shipped every hour to establish Compaq well in the home segment. The company increased penetration to over 350 retail outlets covering even smaller Indian towns. Other strategies like innovative product design like the Presario color PCs and iPAQ legacy-free desktops helped in raising its value in the home segment to become more than H-P’s and HCL’s combined value. The result was there to see in the number finally achieved. This kind of focus would certainly lead to more gain in the current fiscal. Also, it plans to increase its retail network to over 500 stores with the aim of penetrating further into small B and C class cities. The battle lines are clearly drawn between Compaq and HCL
