HEWLETT PACKARD
The company which started its operation from a garage and is now a one of the global leaders in IT segment has its bagfull in India too. While HP India managed only a 35% growth, it continued its vice like grip on the printer market. From last years 39% market share in value terms HP increased its market share to 43%. In fact it dominates the inkjet and laser printers so decisively that the only position any other company can aspires to hold is the number two rank.
While HP had about three quarter of the inkjet market in 2000-01 up from 66% in the previous year, it continued to its virtual monopoly in the laser printer market with a 82% market share in value terms. DATAQUEST recognizes the company as one of the biggest force in the segment and confers DQ Top 20 award for country's Top Printer Vendor to Hewlett Packard India.

The Undisputed King
Increasing competition, well HP continued its dominance in the printer
segment and increased its market share by a few notches in 2000-01.
While HP India managed only a 35% growth, it continued its vice like
grip on the printer market. From last years 39% market share in value
terms, including impact printers, HP increased its market share to 43%. If
only segments where HP operates, lasers and inkjets, are taken HP’s
market share jumps to a sheer dominance figure of 78% up 3 notches from
its 1999-00 market share of 75%. It dominates inkjet and laser printers so
decisively that the only position any other company aspires to is number
two. While HP had about three quarters of the inkjet market in 2000-01 up
from 66% in the previous year, it conceded a few points in the laser
printer market to competition but continued to its virtual monopoly with a
82% market share in value terms.
While HP continues on its numero uno status in the printer space and
competition seeming far far away, Epson and Canon, with its restructuring,
could pose a threat for HP in the inkjet segment, while ever-aggressive
Samsung could be the dark horse in the laser segment. Also the new threat
in the inkjet segment from Compaq with its own branded inkjet printers
could see its death well before the start with the proposed merger of the
two IT giants.
