Banking on IP
When his brethren in the IT industry were clamoring for servicing contracts, Rajesh Hukku decided to take the less beaten track of product development. As another TCS engineer in the 80s, the US success of one software product he worked on provided the trigger. It was then that Hukku decided he would rather have his products work for him, than he working for others. In 1992, Hukku, then working for Citibank, decided to spin off a new venture around the bank's in-house Microbanker core banking product developed in India. He convinced Citibank to provide the seed fund, and thus COSL was born, later gaining fame as i-Flex. Hukku's deftness was evident from his initial forays into virgin markets in Africa and Middle East. Today, Oracle has bought over Citigroup's stake but Hukku is firmly in the driving seat.
