The academic
Though V Rajaraman has had several feathers in his illustrious cap, it is as an academician that he would always be remembered best, especially amongst the first generation of Indians who achieved excellence in computer science. Many of them would have gained immensely from the 16 books on computer science the professor penned. Extremely popular at their time owing to the lucid and easy style of presentation. Many of the older alumni of IIT Kanpur and IISc Bangalore would remember him with fondness-joining as an assistant professor in 1963, he headed the Computer Center at IITK from 1967-72 and again from 1976-79 initiating the computer science educational program and guiding its growth through 1966-79. His achievements at IISc include setting up the National Supercomputing Facility, and the National Center of Science Information.
