The policy maker
MGK Menon would always be remembered mainly for his stint as secretary at the DoE. The renowned scientist was at the helm of a department that had a mandate to control the developing computing industry and, unfortunately, for many years DoE was a word of ridicule and revile amongst the country's fledgling IT sector. He took his rightful position in the annals of Indian IT history when he was appointed as a scientific advisor to Atal Behari Vajpayee and recommended setting up a separate ministry of IT. He has been responsible for framing many of the policies for the IT industry in India. Hopefully, these would stand the test of time and his role at DoE during the license raj would gradually fade away.
