The Top 10: 2 - HCL Infosystems: OK if theyre Happy
HCL Infosystems ranked at the bottom of the table on HR score. But when employees are happy, who cares?
Friday, August 31, 2007

With stark disparity in its employee and HR performance, HCL Infosystems makes for a story of contrasts. It is the only company, which, in spite of showing poor performance on the HR front, manages to be in the Top 5 every year, riding on the strength of high level of satisfaction amongst its employees. On the HR front, the score has gone down by one point as compared to last year, and the rank declined from #23 to #31, mainly due to low CAGR. However, on the employee front, the companys score shot up. It has retained employee satisfaction on all parameters as compared to last year with significant rise in satisfaction on preferred employerinternal. As per survey results, overall, HCL employees are found to be very satisfied with the growth opportunities and job security offered by the company. Among the areas that evoked high satisfaction levels among employees were relationship with peers, the companys openness to ideas and suggestions given by employees, encouragement by managers to speak freely at meetings, and respect for the companys work culture and ethics.

The company also worked towards plugging the gaps. One such identified area was communications considering the slow flow of information. A key focus area for HCL Infosystems during the last one year has been automation of the HR system including setting up of portals to enable faster flow of information and policies.

Another area was the identification and creation of new talent from the non-IT pool. Aligned with this was the initiation of its Business Continuity Plan program, which identifies continuity in case of any employee-related contingency so that work doesnt come to a halt. The training initiatives through the training facility in Hyderabad and various online learning programs like enable@HCL, TechForum, e-Kaksh, and i-Learn were further geared toward enabling the companys strategy of creating talent rather than acquiring.
