In the graphics: What Employees Want
Friday, August 31, 2007

And what they feel proud about. And what they desire for. And what they admire in their employers. And what they want. The DQ-IDC survey asked the IT employees in India to react to a set of statements related to their employers and employment. Here is a graphical presentation of the selected statements, and how they reacted to those.

The ranking has been obtained by taking both the HR score and employee satisfaction score. The latter is arrived by attaching different weight to specific areas and sub parameters. But these statements give you a closer look at how employees feel about each of the sub parameters, which are the companies that score best on each of those parameters and which are the ones that fare worst.

While, by and large, the tone is positiveit is not surprising to anyone who follows the Indian IT industryit is not just halo factor. Indian employees know what they want. It is not surprising to find that within the same broad category, a company may fare very well on one statement and very poorly on another. Take IBM. It is in the bottom three when it comes to employees reaction to the statementthe company responds immediately to any issue or problems I havein the same area, culture and environment, it features right at the top when it comes to the companys sensitivity to women employees. Indian employees know where to give a company its due.

Methodology

For an overall assessment of the industrys performance on each question and therefore each parameter, medians were calculated. Based on this, for instance, the industry as a whole got the highest scores on people and company culture and the lowest on salary and appraisal systems.

However, the key score to watch out for is that of the "Most Satisfied" category. Basically it means that the strength of a specific company is judged by how many of its employees are most satisfied on any attributerather than on how the average for a company turns out. The reason: it is a measure of the intensity of employee engagement with the company. As a result, all rankings of companies in the statements given below are based on "Most Satisfied" or "Strongly Agree" scores only.

OVERALL SATISFACTION
While by and large Indian employees are satisfied with their employers, and even feel pride in working for the company that they are employed in, the only incentive that can have some impact is a hike in salary
