Synechron is still a baby amongst the giants, with an annual
revenue of just Rs 126 crore. But it has shattered the myth that you need to be
big-staffed to be a best employer. Synechrons success is a good signal for
small, niche start-ups that often try hard to retain employees lured by big
brands.
The Pune-based company has scored well on the HR rankingsat
#5, as compared to its employee rank of #11. While part of the good score in the
HR ranking is because of its high growth (one of the parameters), it has also
put in some robust practices. There are reasons to believe that Synechrons
better performance is more due to its high value business (like a consulting
firm environment) and less due to the companys standing. In fact, employees
rated regular and constructive feedback from superiors, professional behavior at
corporate level, and corporate governance as the weak areas. Vivian Fernandes,
director, HR, terms these issues as teething troubles, as the company is growing
rapidly.
Synechron is ranked #1 in the industry in terms of both growth
opportunity, and salary and compensation, and #2 in overseas opportunity. All
these are natural to a growing, high value, global services business.

There are sparks of good HR practices too. One of the things
Synechron employees seem to have liked the most is its transparent appraisal
procedure. Fernandes says that the procedure has been made over a period of two
years with inputs from the team in Pune and overseas. Special emphasis has been
on making the process as simple and fair as possible. The company is also doling
out ESOPs to its performers, and has small schemes like Spot Bonus and Surpass
Awards.
While the going has been good for Synechron, the next few years
will really challenge its mettle as it transforms itself from a small company to
a mid-sized player. Whether this baby turns into a giant in the coming years, is
a question left for future surveys. Page(s) 1
