After two consecutive years of flat growth, Accel bounced back. Over the year it focused on strengthening its partner relationships: grew the Sun business from $6 mn the previous year to $9 mn last fiscal. The company also got into disaster recovery and business continuity services. On the services front Accel inked deals with Hindustan Times (Rs 4.5 crore), Directorate of Treasuries, Kerala (Rs 1.44 crore) and PWD, Mumbai (Rs 3.5 crore).

The internal restructuring of Tata Technologies that started earlier with the appointment of auto industry veterans in the top management culminated in 2005-06 with the Rs 400 crore acquisition of UK-based INCAT Technologies, a provider of PLM services for the auto and aerospace industries. The INCAT subsidiary in turn acquired Stuttgart-based CEDIS Mechanical Engineering, an automotive engineering and design (E&D) services provider, to expand its European presence.

It was a great year for Aztec, now re-branded Aztecsoft. Besides a healthy topline, profit after tax also grew by 106% to Rs 37 crore, from Rs 18 crore in 2005-06. The growth was partially due to the expansion of the outsourced product development market and because the company got into independent testing services in a big way. Testing is now one third-about 35%-of Aztecsoft's total revenues, and grew by 60%.

After the acquisition of Macromedia Inc, Adobe India brought Macromedia's Bangalore R&D center into its fold. The company's employee strength in the country rose to 650, after the acquisition. Adobe also shifted its Print and Classic Publishing Unit to Adobe India. Announced a preview version of its Adobe Reader in Hindi, which includes a user interface in Hindi and is developed primarily for the large vernacular audience in the country.

Acquisition-hungry Subex was able to hold on to its margins reasonably well, as the company grew more than 50% on the profit side. 65% of its revenues came from products, up from 54% in 2004-05. The product business grew by 86% on the top-line. The $140 mn acquisition of UK's Azure, a revenue assurance company, will take care of Subex's marketing challenges abroad while also helping telecom operators establish Revenue Operations Centers.

Mediaman's reputation as a distributor for niche products got further enhanced in 2005-06. Flash memory growth in India was phenomenal during the year, and the company made the most of it with Transcend accounting for more than half its revenues. This was followed by Bravish laptop accessories, owned by Mediaman, that had more than 800 products under its brand name. And Western Digital left Priya to tie up with Mediaman to address the external hard drive retail segment.
