The best path was to be an independent entity
Wednesday, January 30, 2008

Can you share the genesis of GS 1010 platform that you operate on?
It was three years ago that we began looking at the wireless sensor networks in order to improve automations in industries through wireless technology, and decided that the best way to do was via wireless. The solutions that were present had really low power to run on battery. Laptops were good but only for a few hours and wouldnt last for several months at a stretch. We developed the software to solve the problem; we decided the best path was to be an independent entity, named GainSpan.

What opportunities do you foresee in a market like this?
We are trying to get the message across to the industry, end users, and OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers). We are also trying to talk to manufacturing representatives so that we can use them as our channel partners to take the products to our customers. And if you look at the market in our country, India is at the beginning of that curve.

Elucidate on how would GainSpan help in enhancing the traffic management systems?
Once you have Wi-Fi in metros, it is important to use it in different public service systems. Once you have the network, traffic management is simple. For example, in the US they put sensors beneath the road; when you drive and the car stops on that, the sensor tells you how many cars are on the road and gives you other details. The bottom line is once you have this in place, you are in a better position to coordinate traffic lights.

Vijay Parmar president & CEO, GainSpan

How does the future auger for GainSpan?
We started with two main domainsindustrial and commercial automation. We started focusing on the US markets and now we have just raised one round of funding, we brought in another Venture Capitalist investor and we are ready for the next stage of our life, ie, to expand sales and market worldwide. For this we have chosen four important destinations outside the US and they are India, China, Japan, and Europe. We are setting sales and marketing operations in these places. We also have a development center in India.
