UTI Bank: No More Printing Blues

UTI bank was one of the first private banks to start operations in 1994, after the government of India allowed private banks to be established. The bank is promoted by Unit Trust of India, LIC and General Insurance Company and its associates. With a nationwide network of more than 200 branch offices, the bank has one of the largest numbers of ATMs-1,250-across the country.

With a huge growth in volumes, the company's existing print infrastructure was facing serious constraints. The bank's print volumes range from 25 lakh to 30 lakh impressions every month, which include cheque books, customer account statements, mailers, TDS certificates among others.

UTI is now able to mail personalized cheque books to its customers within 24 hours of receiving a request

The bank was printing its cheque books on cheque book dispensers which were not proving to be an ideal solution. For instance, the cheque books could not be personalized as per customer requirements, and a large quantity of blank stationary had to be stocked in the bank's branches. It also created a huge inventory of pre-printed stationery, and this often resulted in obsolete stock, material loss and infrastructure constraints.

To address the range of print related problems, the bank enlisted the services of Xerox and opted for outsourcing. It deployed the Xerox DP 180, a micro ink magnetic printer that can print 180 pages per minute. According to Salil Krishna, senior vice president-design, UTI Bank, "We outsourced the print operations to Xerox around three years back and started with one Xerox DP 180. With increased demands and volumes, we installed one more DP 180 to cope with the aggressive growth."

Having outsourced print operations the bank has improved upon its capability to cater to changing customer requirements. The bank can now to reach out to its customers more effectively and improved the turnaround time. UTI is now able to mail personalized cheque books to its customers within 24 hours of a request. On full bleed capacity utilization, the DP 180 can print 540 cheques leaves per minute. This means that there are no bundles of unused cheque books lying at UTI Bank's 300 branches, thus helping the bank save on precious real estate.

The bank can make changes to its cheque book format instantaneously, thus keeping a minimum inventory of 100-150 cheque books at its branches and prevent obsolescence and wastage. By using these printers it can now print bar codes at centers where MICR is not used

The bank has derived more flexibility and better time lines to improve design changes and roll out new products and services.

By outsourcing its print infrastructure to Xerox, the bank was able to focus on its core banking operations as Xerox is now responsible for the overall print operations of the bank. UTI Bank no longer needs to have printer assets of its own as they are installed and maintained by Xerox. Other benefits derived through outsourcing print services ranges from managing device obsolescence to round-the-clock effective operations.
