IT/BPO shows the maximum maturity in having a strategic IT
department. There is disparity within this segment too-while 43% of IT
services companies acknowledge IT as strategic, the number goes down to 29%
for BPOs. The dismal figure for services is due to the low hit rates amongst
travel and gems & jewellery companies-only 6% and 9% of emerging enterprises
in these sectors look at a strategic IT department, respectively. |
 |
Thankfully, more than two-thirds of the respondent
organizations have at least a separate IT department. While 89% of IT
services and 80% of pharma companies do so, travel with only 35% and gems &
jewelry with 32% prove to be the laggards.

enterprises, the MD/CEO has the final say in IT decisions, but at least the
IT division staff can be influencers in the same number of cases.

Emerging Enterprises across all sectors believe that
dedicated IT departments will smoothen their function. Most BFSI respondents
said that an IT department helps in boosting employee confidence in tackling
IT related challenging |

How long have CIOs been heading the IT Department in present
or previous organization? |
 |

Retention of IT-skilled manpower is a problem with emerging
enterprises. No wonder the proportion of organizations having CIOs with more
than 5 years of experience diminishes significantly |
 |
Emerging enterprises are non-federal and a long way from
attaining enough maturity to utilize more consultants. At 20%, it is only
the retail sector that seriously looked at decentralizing decision making.
And 25% of stockbrokers and 24% of travel companies did utilize consultants |
