India's IT Industry Over the years (Rs crore)

Exports continued to remain the big brother, though domestic services also grew, with offshore work moving away from traditional ADM to more high-value work. Exports will continue on the high, unless rupee appreciation plays havoc. At the same time, global services giants like IBM and HP are strongly focused on the domestic market

How the Export Industry Fared

The democratization wave does not seem to have touched the Indian IT exporters, as the Top 20 firms further consolidated their position

Though network integration, AMCs, and facilities management are still the bread and butter for most IT services providers, managed services and packaged software implementation have emerged as their caviar

Infosys and Tata picked up the share lost by HCL, HP, and Wipro. It is a pure export versus domestic growth story as export-focused companies, Infosys and Tata Technologies (for Tata Group), stole the show

Tata Group

STRENGTHS
Extremely good mindshare and reputation in India
The groups ambition to go global in all businesses extends to IT

WEAKNESSES
Yet to leverage group synergies
Not listed abroad means losing out on mindshare as well as acquisition currency

Rank

1

Revenue
Rs 21,155
crore

Wipro Group

STRENGTHS
Successfully managed integration of inorganic entities
A sizeable domestic business that helps in derisking

WEAKNESSES
Is not as PR-savvy as Infosys
Despite being a bigger business, it is valued lower than Infosys

Rank

2

Revenue
Rs
14,200
crore

Infosys Group

STRENGTHS
Extremely high mindshare in target markets
Very good mindshare among target employees

WEAKNESSES
Too dependent on exports, and that too on the US
Too dependent on ADM business while other areas like infrastructure and BPO growing faster

Rank

3

Revenue
Rs
13,893
crore

HP Group

STRENGTHS
Is a leader in almost all the segments that it operates in, except services
Has the broadest range of products and hence can grow irrespective of changes in market dynamics

WEAKNESSES
Still behind IBM in services in India
Globally, BPO portfolio is limited

Rank

4

Revenue
Rs
12,450
crore

HCL Group

STRENGTHS
Even at this size, keeps the entrepreneuial spirit
The only group to be equally well-entrenched in export and domestic business

WEAKNESSES
Not leveraged synergies as a group
HCLI too dependent on Nokia business

Rank

5

Revenue
Rs
9,198
crore
