Relative dissatisfaction on salaries and the appraisal system

Employees of Bangalore-based MsourcE have a lot going for them. They love what they do, they like their colleagues and immediate bosses and admire the culture of the company. They ranked the company among the top 5 in every parameter, bar three—training (6th), salary and compensation (10th) and appraisals (9th). The last two also being the key reasons why the company is not among the Top 5.

First the upsides. MsourcE employees ranked their company very high on people (rank #2), company culture (rank #4) and job content (rank #4). Nearly 85% of the employees said that their managers were always available whenever they needed help or advice and a similar proportion said their relationship with peers made for a better work environment. With few employees complaining of stress, and more than three fourths of them saying they were excited about their work, only 9% of the company’s staff felt that working in the company was a short-term opportunity.

On the downside, there was relative dissatisfaction on salaries & compensation and their appraisal systems. With MsourcE not being among the best paymasters, barely half the employees thought that they were paid on par with industry standards and an even lesser percentage thought that they were paid enough for the work they did. Employees were also dissatisfied with their perks and salary hikes despite a fairly decent hike the last time around. This is crucial considering the fact that 65% of the employees said they joined because the money was good but now nearly 57% say they would leave on salary issues.

Appraisals are often closely related to compensation and satisfaction on both these parameters is very closely related. As a result, satisfaction on appraisals was also low. Only about 37% of MsourcE employees felt that the appraisal system is fair.
Despite its high profile messaging, the company seems to have some external branding issues with not a single employee from any other company surveyed naming it as their “dream company.” On the other hand, while 31% of the company’s own employees named it as their dream company, another 17% named GE and 11% named Infosys.
