Rolta has been in the news, (mostly of not the desirable kind), for its people practices for the past few years. Most of these were unfavorable enough to come under the medias extreme scrutiny. But the company has made a rapid turnaround in its image and overall HR practices over a short span of time to climb up to #3 in this years BES Top 20.

Training has been core to Roltas growth in the recent past. The company has introduced structured training programs in various disciplines such as GIS, and engineering and ship design through its training academy. As the company has been serving the high-end of the value chain and is getting into unique business areas through recent acquisitions, it is focusing on imparting knowledge on cutting edge technology and sharing its business acumen with the new entrants.

Apart from training, the company invested heavily in improving infrastructure and making the appraisal process more transparent.

The company also underwent a lot of internal restructuring and appointed two joint managing directors in India as well as separate vertical and regional heads in different geographies. Now that the company has built a global footprint, creating cultural parity within a multi-cultural workforce still remains a big challenge. The company is addressing this issue seriously with more focused soft-skills training.

Another challenge the company is foreseeing is in the automation of its HR processes, as its employee strength grows faster than ever. Keeping its growth plans in focus, it has invested heavily in an ERP system to automate and integrate all the HR processes across all geographies. To roll out this initiative, Vinay Sawarkar made a shift from his previous role as head, HR to director, Operations, New Initiatives.

The company is also looking at introducing mentorship programs and interactive intranet portals shortly, to better manage the communication process and improve organizational culture. With these dynamic HR initiatives on the cards, it remains to be seen how Rolta maintains its leadership position as the best employer in the years to come.
