For years HCL Infosystems, the only hardware company in the BES top 10 club,
has lived up to its image of being a dream company. The progenitor of the HCL
Group, HCL Infosystems, is often correctly referred to as the Entrepreneurial
Incubator of the Indian IT industry.
This year too, even though it slips one position, it continues the tradition
of staying in the top league. The overall decline in ranking is mainly due to
its employee score and rank, which ironically was its strength till last year.
The reason, partly, could be the fact that HCL embarked on a journey of
transforming from a product organization to an ICT system integrator. HR being
integral to this transformation, right from strategy conception to last mile
communication to implementation, could have been substantilly impacted in the
process. This transformation led to re-training half of its business leaders in
order to facilitate adoption of additional responsibilities.
Even as HCLs HR score has tremendously improved, the company continued with
its HR initiatives on the development and training front led by two broad
initiativesthe Leadership Development Framework (called iLead) and iLearn.
While iLearn has three parts including sales, technical, nontechnical, iLead
includes various types of development initiatives from instructor-led to
technology-based learning platforms like blended learning opportunities, and
fast-track programs like Mindia TecXperts and Forerunner Sales.
On all counts, the employees seem to be happy with the company on important
parameters like work culture, salary, appraisals, and job content. Its internal
Employee Engagement Survey also reflects high scores on people engagement and
team relationships.

This year the company also introduced many new rewards and recognitions, and
initiatives like the Booster and Bonanza awards to reward best performances.
On the flipside, dissatisfaction with the kind of work, though not serious
now, seems to be brewing as most emplyees termed it monotonous, and complained
about HCLs aversion to taking risks.
