The classic HR conundrum: when youre a small company, you normally have strong interpersonal relationships that make it comfortable for employees to have easy access to superiors for discussing any problems. This ensures high satisfaction levels. On the other hand, employees have also been found to leave organizations because they are smallan image issue!

Bangalore-based Span Infotech is grappling with a similar scenario. While one may rave about the growth opportunities and strong interpersonal relationships, the fact remains that employees were an unsatisfied lot when it came to the appraisal system. Most have rated this as one of the weak areas of the company; this notwithstanding Span having an appraisal system in place wherein every six months an identified HR representative would meet employees to discuss their problems and get their feedback. But it seems that the existing appraisal system failed to deliver when it counted the most. Company image was another negative, being cited as the number one reason for leaving the organization.

However, being a small company, Span Infotech has its own share of advantages, as the employees have ample opportunity to shine and grow not only in their own specialized area of work but outside their domain of expertise too. This is absent in large companies where one is only allowed to work in his or her specified domain. Span Infotechs employees have rated growth opportunities as one of the strong areas of the company.

Training is another strong area as most employees seem to be satisfied on this front. Engaged in providing both technical and soft skills training, the company has provided role-based training in excess of fifteen days. Looking ahead, the company intends to sponsor certifications like JAVA, CCNA, etc.

Also, sensing the need to structure a comprehensive appraisal system, the company rolled out Span Elitea new program to encourage employees to contribute and perform beyond their current roles. A good performance earns reward points and a place in the elite CIO club.
