When iGate jumped 26 positions in last years survey to emerge as the third
best IT employer, many critics said it was the halo effect of the then announced
stock option plan. Even in our analysis, we focused on last years survey and
kept our conclusion open on whether it was truly a decisive change. Featuring in
the list of twenty is a feat by itself, and now iGate has improved its ranking
to emerge as the best IT employer in India, by taking the #1 slot.
It goes without saying that the rise did not come by accident but what is
noteworthy is how fast iGate has managed to emerge as a preferred employer. By
the companys own admission, it started just about three years back, when CEO
Phaneesh Murthy decided that it was important enough to be a stated mission of
the company. But even then, the deadline that the company had set for itself for
being one of the top ten employers was 2012. In 2008, it is already #1.
So the question is not how iGate did it but how it did it so fast? Srinivas
Kandula, the dynamic HR head, attributes it to a holistic HR approach rather
than an isolated, piecemeal approach to each HR function. In addition, there are
branded overall programs such as HAP-PSY-CAP (happy psychological capital) and I
Love iGate that tries to help employees remain mentally satisfied and instill a
pride for working in the company, respectively.

Another differentiator is the community approach, which actively encourages
socialization, la campus style. So, there are communitiesreal, supported by
online activitieswithin iGate around skills, region as well as hobbies.
Yet, some challenges remain. iGate featured as #25 in the parameter of
independence to take decisions by the employees. HR head, Kandula admits that
the transformation of the company undertaken a few years back needed some amount
of discipline. Now that it is over, he has to work at changing that perception.
The other challenge is that though iGate is seen by the employees as an employer
to be proud of, outsiders still give it a very low score2.3as a dream company
to work for. That means it has to do a little better marketing.
