Last year when TCS layed off some non-performers, close to 500, there was
much brouhaha over it. Then the company had to let go a few more people who had
fudged their resumes. But, TCS also had a lot to boast about. For instance, the
company created history by becoming the largest private employer in India
crossing the 100,000 employee mark. It is also the first Indian company to
employ a 10,000 plus non-Indian workforce, close to 9.2% of the total strength.
TCS moved firmly on its HR digitization roadmap, with most of its functions
digitized and automated. The company has also launched numerous other
initiatives as part of its employee management gameplan. Thus the appraisal and
learning systems SPEED and iCALMS (integrated competency and learning management
system) are completely automated and transparent.
Over the year the HR team has also put in place a role-based structure that
captures the job profile of almost all functions. For instance, the team has
already defined 900 plus roles and approximately 750 role-based goal templates
spread across various business/function groups in the organization. There has
also been work in terms of realigning the company structure that not only brings
HR closer to other business functions, but makes it aware of the business goals
and realities by creating small manageable units.

But there is a worrying factor as well. Its employee score has plummeted by 7
positions, thereby bringing to #6 from top. The biggest grouse the employees
seem to have is against the payscale, as obvious from the two parameterssalary
hikes and perks and benefitson which the company comes in at the bottom. But
all this is fairly understandable keeping in mind the overall gloomy business
environment and the steps that the company had to take. For instance, this year
the average salary hike has been around 10%, down from 12.13% last year. The
company has also announced that due to the exogenous factors, there would be a
cut in the variable pay as well.
