During FY 08, NIIT Technologies focused its efforts on consolidating its operations globally. In a significant move, the company strengthened its European management team with the appointment of two senior vice presidents to head its UK and Continental Europe IT solutions businesses. NIIT Technologies also acquired German-based SofTec GmbH, to strengthen its presence in the travel, transportation, and logistics verticals. This was also the year the company unveiled its multi-faceted software as a service (SaaS) offering.

Mascon global acquired two US firms Jass & Associates and SDG for $55 mn to expand its global operations. These helped Mascon to have a major partnership with Cisco and also enabled the company set up a global delivery solution for GE. The company also signed a strategic partnership with Chicago-based mobile transaction player C-SAM to strengthen its IP led strategies. Greater Pacific Capital announced a strategic investment of $27 mn for 14.9% stake in Mascon Global during the year.

During the year, Genpact went public and mopped up $494.1 mn through an IPO of 35.2 mn shares. Post the IPO, GEs stake in the company came down to 23% from 28%, and the combined holding of General Atlantic and Oak Hill Capital Partners reduced to 52% from 60%. IT and IT services accounted for 25% of its total business. Infrastructure and implementation businesses each accounted for half of this. GEs concentration is higher in IT business as compared to the BPO business.

Symantec expanded its R&D and technical operations in India with the opening of its second R&D facility here. The Centre of Innovation at Chennai would play a critical role in the development of Symantecs next generation security and availability products, as well as solutions for enterprises and consumers across the world. On the business front, HDFC Bank entered into a $7.4 mn, three-year strategic enterprise level agreement with Symantec for IT compliance, enterprise security, and storage management solutions.

This was the first full year completed following the demerger of the original company, and the turnaround was perfect. New components were added in FY 08, which included motherboard, TFT, and memory units. The company also launched its lowest priced laptop, at sub-15k, and a mobile at Rs 499. Xenitis Infotech got orders for the components business worth Rs 1,000 crore for the next three years. The company also got in to OEM arrangements with four big mobile handset players.
