26|Acer India : Consumers Darling
One of the best growth stories of recent times, Acer, had a spectacular year. A 230% growth in notebook shipments and 35% in desktops, says it all. The global product refresh strategy whereby Acer enlisted the BMW Design Group to come out with the Gemstone design notebooks was a sparkler.

WS Mukund, MD

Highlights
u Bagged Avaya Global Connect customer responsiveness award for the IT hardware industry
u Won three Red Dot 2007 awards for product design
u Opened exclusive brand outlets in tier-2 cities like Bhubaneshwar, Mysore, and Jabalpur

l Start-up Year: 1999 l Products & Services: PCs, notebooks, servers, monitors, peripherals, and maintenance l Branches: 12 l Dealer Outlets: 400 l Address: First Floor, George Thangiah Complex (East), 80 Feet Road, Indiranagar, Bangalore560 075 l Tel: +91-80-25219520 l Fax: +91-80-25219535 l Website: www.acer.co.in

Hrithik Roshan as their brand ambassador clicked remarkably well for Acer to gain mindshare. No wonder the consumer segment was the king for the company (notebooks 80%, desktops 40%). In monitors too, Acer excelled at the expense of Samsung and LG, primarily through 15-inch CRTs. It also gained 25% share in 25-inch TFTs. Meanwhile, on Projectors, Acer was ranked number one by Pacific Media Associates in the XGA category. This is significant because Acer already is strong in other projector technologies like DLP, SVGA and Micro-Portable.

The sole dampener was a flat year for x86 servers, mainly due to declining repeat business from BFS customers. Gujarat and Tamil Nadu government however, gave Acer good traction. Government schools in Punjab going in for 25k PCs, was the companys single largest order in India.

27|L&T Infotech : Manufacturing a Giant
The IT arm of the $7 bn engineering conglomerate Larsen & Toubro has decided to go the whole hog in manufacturing. The vertical currently contributes around 65% of the overall revenue, while the remaining comes from the engineering, banking and financial segments. The company also found good traction for its verification & validation services. It aims to be all things to all people in manufacturing, and to do that it is adopting an inorganic and organic route.

VK Magapu, CEO

u Announced intention to acquire a US firm in the manufacturing vertical for about $300 mn, within a year
u Major capacity building exercise, with upcoming software development centers at Mahape and Powai in Mumbai. More centers at Bangalore and a twin tower in Chennai

L&T Infotech is also keen on geographic diversification, tapping into its Danish roots by focusing more on the Nordic region as well as mainland Europe. Currently, the region constitutes around 14% of the overall revenue, as compared to over 75% from North America. In the coming year, there will be a bigger push for the Middle East as well considering that the group has immense resonance in the region with clients like the oil giant Chevron. Meanwhile, the company is also looking at the domestic markets, as of now L&T Infotech is working closely with the parent group, meeting 65-70% of the groups IT requirements. The proposed IPO has also been deferred to 2009 keeping in mind the volatile market conditions.

28|Sun Microsystems India : GEM of a Year
Following its upgradation as a geographically established market (GEM) for Sun worldwide two years back, Sun India has consistently witnessed close to 30% q-o-q growth. Traditional strongholds like telecom, IT/BPO, and BFSI continued to boom, and new successes were scripted in retail. Nevertheless, like other vendors, the real story was mid-market with clients like Amity, Prime Focus, and Sun TV that contributed nearly Rs 600 crore in FY 08.

Bhaskar Pramanik, President

Highlights
u Helped launch 230-odd startups into different verticals as part of the entrepreneurial development initiative
u Declared as one of Indias strongest business brands by Superbrands India

Product-wise too Sun has been able to achieve a right balance in revenue. Servers garnered Rs 800 crore, storage Rs 300 crore, and software and professional services accounted for the rest. Most of the large accounts involved primarily servers but Sun also bagged stand-alone storage clients.

Suns mix of hardware and software could pit it against HP and IBM in India, but it hardly ever had any services presence. An attempt was made to address the anomaly this year. The Sun Learning Services accounted for Rs 50 crore, professional services under Sun Tech Consulting took off as well.
