The India launch of the ultra portable U60 UMPC signaled Gigabytes entry into the mobile lifestyle domain in the country. Motherboards though continued to be the companys mainstayit completed selling 2 mn motherboards in India during the year accounting for 15% of the marketshare; also, it has set up a target to sell 1 mn more during this year. The movement from regional to national distribution model two years back and separation of the sales team and channel strategy from D-Link has boosted its motherboard sales.

After unfurling its consulting flag in markets of South Africa, USA, and Europe, Pune-based Nihilent is making significant headway in India now. Though the domestic revenue is still a tad less than 2% of the overall revenue, the trends are quite encouraging, especially for its flagship performance management tool, Lamat, which is targeted at the SMB segment. So far the company has over six clients for Lamat in the Mumbai/Pune belt, like Demag Cranes and Components.

Quantum pumped in $10 mn to establish its India Development Center in Hyderabad. This R&D facility would help in faster time-to-market of new disk, software, and tape solutions. The center is focused on developing the DXi-Series of disk-based backup appliances that would play a critical role in the companys backup, recovery, and archive strategy going forward. Quantum also doubled the size of its sales, marketing, and service team. The company appointed Sanjay Kumar Dutta to head the India operations as country manager.

Expanding its product portfolio was the leitmotif for HDS throughout the year. It launched Dynamic Thin Provisioning, and followed up with business continuity enablement. In between, the company also beefed up its solutions portfolio to include file and content services and heterogeneous storage management software. During FY 08, HDS also outlined its focus on the mid-market segment and tier-2 regions; consequently, it expanded its tier-2 channel community. It also expanded its partnership with Sun.

During the year, Polycom made significant investment in India in setting up a product and solutions development center in Hyderabad. The facility, which has over 70 employees, houses development programs for the portfolio of voice communications solutions for mobile, desktop, and conferencing applications. Polycom opened offices at eight locations across India. The company also outlined aggressive plans for entry into the retail market with plans to tie-up with retail chains to enable walk-in customers to buy its products.
