29|CSC India : The Covansys Effect
CSC seems to have taken the inorganic route to growth with a vengeance, a
move that did have significant impact on its India operations. Firstly, it
acquired Covansys for $1.3 bn. Not only did this bring in six delivery centers
worldwide, it accelerated CSCs strategic offshore offerings, especially in
verticals like telecom, healthcare, life sciences and retail. And doubled the
workforce in India, taking the total headcount to 14,103.
The company also completed acquisition of First Consulting Group for $365 mn,
enhancing its healthcare offerings, and further expanding its global delivery
capabilities. There was a 67% rise in India revenues, taking it to a respectable
Rs 70 crore.

30|Capgemini India : La Vie est Belle
Though much of the IT industry was going through a tizzy due to slowdown in
the US, the auditors at Capgemini were pretty pleased at their fortuitous
pan-European spread. On the business front, there was much traction for the
platform-based services from the US and continental Europe. Most notably was the
integrated compliance and operations platform developed in conjunction with
Teradata. With the completion of the Kanbay acquisition, Capgemini further
strengthened its BFSI practice and the vertical accounted for around 60% of the
revenue in FY 08.

In the intervening year, India became a critical cog in the
wheel, as it became the companys largest country operations.
Currently, India accounts for close to 23% of the workforce, and the
number is set to go as high as 40%. Capgeminis offshore ratio
stands at 24% (up from 13% last year) and, as it goes up, so will
Indias strategic importance in the group. The company is also
increasingly by looking at India as a market, and has recently
launced its consulting business. It is in talks with a few southern
state governments to offer consulting services. Page(s) 1 2
