In a tacit admission that the rules of IT services do not apply to BPO, Infosys decided to break its long-standing tradition of pure organic growth when it made its biggest acquisition in its twenty-six year old history to grow the BPO piece and acquired the shared services centers of Royal Philips Electronics spread over India, Poland, and Thailand for $28 mn in a combined deal that also saw Infosys securing a $250 mn contract from the Dutch major spread over seven years. It has already paid handsome dividends with its F&A service-line growing 79% and driving company growth significantly. In addition, it added new locations and 1,400 people.

Infosys BPO drew two-thirds of its revenue from horizontal services, most of which are growing well. Customer interaction services (grew 57%), order management (grew 54%), and knowledge services (grew 29%) are its big areas, apart from F&A. However, HR outsourcing actually showed a decline (in rupee terms). Procurement also showed a sharp decline.

Infosys BPO, which was one of the first BPO companies to internally develop a platform managed to secure four customers for this, even as almost every BPO company jumped at the platform BPO opportunity in FY 08. The managements thinking is that the platform, due to its flexible cost structure, will help the company during the current slowdown phase. During the year, Infosys BPO serviced seventy-two clients and added fives.

It also managed to get a head start in the newer verticals like media, entertainment, utilities, and retail which the company clubs under emerging markets. The objective is to help Infosys BPO build capabilities and credentials in each of these specific domains and gain a critical mass before converting them into standalone business units. To that effect, it formed a JV, Source 18, which has managed to rope in National Geographic as a client.
