TCS BPO continued on its chosen path of creating platforms and integrating
them with services to offer end-to-end solutions to customers. The success
included client wins on existing platforms, launch of new platforms, investment
on creation of newer platforms and even partnerships to offer platform-based
services. However, the most explicit reinforcement of its thrust on platforms
came in the form of creation of a platform BPO strategic business unit within
TCS BPO, headed by Raj Agrawal.
Significant progress on this front included the $1.2 bn contract that parent
TCS signed with Nielsen, wherein TCS BPO is slated to provide HRO on its
platform as well as some KPO services. TCS BPO is increasingly eyeing such
integrated IT-BPO deals with TCS.
TCS BPO added HR and payroll platforms created on SAP to its existing
insurance platform IIMS and tied up with Smallstream to provide banking
reconciliation services on a platform. TCS BPO had multiple client wins in HRO
and a major win for providing insurance BPO services to a US-based insurance
firm.
In all verticals, TCS has taken the approach of providing services around
core business functions. While that means providing order provisioning kind of
services in telecom and services around lending and trade settlement in banking,
it has successfully got into the high value clinical data management services, a
part of the drug discovery lifecycle for pharma companies. TCS BPO boasts of
four out of the top ten global pharma majors as its clients in this, including
Glaxo SmithKline, Eli Lilly and Nova Nordisk.
TCS next thrust areas include marketing support analytics for pharma
companies, supply chain and procurement services and other analytics-based
services. It is trying to grow the skill-set organically, even though it is not
averse to acquisitions. In procurement, it is building a platform to offer
services around it.

After a few acquisitions earlier (Pearl, AFS, Phoenix, etc) FY 08 saw no
acquisitions from TCS BPO. On the other hand, it expanded its delivery
capability by adding Hangzhou in China and Baroda in India to its BPO delivery
