The fact that once WNS was World Network Services, a subsidiary of British
Airways is today a matter of pure academic interest. With the $200 mn
acquisition of Aviva Global Service (AGS), the offshore captive of Aviva, that
gives WNS a total potential revenue of $1 bn spread out over the contract
period, WNS largest client ceased to be from the travel and leisure space, its
last link with its genesis.
FY 08 was by far the toughest year for the company, as its high exposure to
mortgage segment saw revenues being hit (mortgage revenue fell from 9% of
revenue to 4%) by the sub-prime crisis, with loss of big clients like First
Magus and IndyMac. If WNS managed to steer through it, albeit with a decelerated
growth, it is because of some early strategic decisions such as betting on
platform-based and knowledge services. Its two platforms, Flovate (auto claims)
and Verifare (airlines) did well in FY 08 while knowledge services contribution
to overall revenue went up from 8% in FY 07 to 14% in FY 08. WNS also went in
for small strategic acquisitions like that of 24X7, a UK-based company for auto
claims and BizApps, an F&A firm.
On the cards is a greater push for continental Europe, driven from the newly
opened center in Bucharest, Romania. WNS is looking at starting operations in
China and Latin America to expand global delivery beyond India, Sri Lanka, and
the Philippines. However, unlike its peers, WNS is still wary of the domestic
BPO opportunity and has little or no intentions of entering the space.
Meanwhile, WNS continues to set newer trends for the industry in myriad ways.
For instance, this year there has been a much greater push for greening its
operation. The company has even declared its goal to be carbon neutral, and is
currently working on a roadmap. The year also saw WNS making major branding
moves by hiring Sri Lankan cricket bowling star Lasith Malinga.
