The exit of TK Kurien from Wipro BPO to head the consulting business for
Wipro marked the completion of the second stage of evolution for the company,
which had started in 1999 as an entrepreneurial venture called Spectramind.
Kurien, when he took over the reigns at Wipro BPO, had initiated a complete
transformation in a company which was then seen as a successful role model for
many. In 2008, thanks to those changes, when many others providing call center
services are facing tough challenges, Wipro BPO is steady and is progressing
well on all fronts that Kurien had identified at that timegrowth of non-voice
business, platform BPO, and creating an efficient supply chain of people. FY 08
saw the growth picking up again, this time with a more robust DNA.
Wipro actively worked toward its strategy of converting its only voice
clients to also offer non-voice services. The voice-non voice mix last year
stood at 60:40, up from 86:14 immediately post the Spectramind acquisition five
years back. It got contracts from two global investment banks for investment
banking and HR services.
BaseWipros BPO platform (base stands for business accelerator services)
went live with four customers.
Wipros voice business matured with service portfolio diversification with
the inclusion of two contracts for technical support for a large PC maker and a
large telecom company. It exited the outbound voice business altogether.
Organic growth continued to be Wipro BPOs mantra during the last year. In
future, Wipro BPO aims to look at acquisitions primarily aimed at boosting its
BFSI, healthcare, and retail portfolio.

While Kurien was responsible for transformation of a call center company to a
broad-based BPO provider, Ashutosh Vaidya, who took over as the new CEO, has two
tasks before him: growing the platform-based services while accelerating growth.
Also, an IT company owned BPO with significant voice revenue could look at
adding value to those offerings in the form of business intelligence-based
predictive analytics. Expect to see more action on these fronts. Page(s) 1
