Software Exports to Grow in Tamil Nadu
The union minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Thiru TR Baalu,
has announced that the opening up of several IT-related facilities in Tamil Nadu
would increase software exports from the state and make it a software hub. He
also said that the facilities would bring about a revolution in the delivery of
services to the citizens of the state. According to him, Tamil Nadu should take
up the challenge of doing well in software exports.
Nokia Siemens, BSNL Take Broadband to Villages
More than 25,000 Indian villages are set to join the digital age and enjoy
the benefits of connectivity as government-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) is to
expand rural broadband access in partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks. BSNL
will deploy Nokia Siemens Networks multi-play solutions, which will allow it to
deliver cost-effective, high-speed Internet access and VPNs among others, to its
customers. The network will also enable BSNL to provide connectivity to
community service centers and other e-gov locations.
MAIT Hails e-Waste Management Guidelines
MAIT, the apex body of IT hardware, training and R&D services sectors, has
welcomed the announcement of the guidelines for environmentally sound
management of e-waste by the Ministry of Environment and Forests. According to
MAIT, the governments announcement is very timely as there is a growing
consumption of IT and electronics products in the country. MAIT has appealed to
the Indian IT industry to voluntarily come forward and comply with the
governments directions.
Spanco to Roll Out Maharashtra SWAN
Spanco Telesystems and Solutions has entered into a contract to roll out state
wide area network (SWAN) in Maharashtra. This contract is going to be executed
with ITI lead consortium. ITI-Spanco will be jointly implementing the project
and maintain it for five years on the build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT)
model. As a part of the planned National e-Governance Action Plan (NEGAP), this
network will provide statewide communication backbone connecting state
headquarter (Mantralaya) to district collector offices and district offices to
taluka (Tehasil) offices.
Apac Virtualization Market to be $1.35-bn by 2010
Virtualization software and services market in Asia Pacific is estimated to
reach $1.35 bn with CAGR of 42% by 2010, according to Springboard Research, an
IT market research firm. Virtualization services is estimated to touch $1 bn by
2010 and would form the major portion of this market as organizations will spend
two to three times more on services than on software. According to the research,
50% of CIOs want to deploy virtualization solutions over the next 18-24 months.
Dax Reaches Out to 25 Cities in India
Dax Networks, a networking company, has announced the extension of its hands-on
technical training program on routing, cabling and switching to 25 cities in the
country. Dax has been running the technical training program every month for
more than four years in Chennai. Over 1,500 engineers across India have been
trained during this period. Dax has also conducted this program in New Delhi,
Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad.
AMD to Downsize
Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) would cut about 10% of its 16,800
employees worldwide between April and September 2008. The move to cut 1,680
employees was part of a cost-cutting plan to achieve results in the forthcoming
quarter. However, according to official sources, AMD is not likely to cut jobs
in its India offices.
Server Market is $727 mn
The Indian server market saw a healthy growth during the calendar year 2007,
according to IDCs Asia/Pacific Quarterly Enterprise Server Tracker Q4, 2007.
The overall India Server Market factory revenue grew by 24% over the previous
calendar year to touch $727 mn. Apart from traditional sectors like telecom,
BFSI, and manufacturing, 2007 also saw the emergence of retail and construction
as key demand drivers.
Boeing Awards for Infosys
Infosys was awarded the 2007 Boeing Performance Excellence Award (BPEA) by the
Boeing Company for achieving a gold level of performance over the 12-month
period. Infosys Technologies was among the few companies out of the
approximately 10,000 Boeing worldwide suppliers to receive a gold level
performance award.
Security Spending to Rise
A Cisco study has revealed that three of every five IT decision makers plan
to increase security spending within the next year. Commissioned by Cisco and
conducted by InsightExpress, a third-party market research firm, the study
features surveys of more than 2,000 remote workers and IT professionals from
various industries in 10 countries: the United States, United Kingdom, France,
Germany, Italy, Japan, China, India, Australia, and Brazil.

3i Infotech has been awarded a Capability Approval Certificate by the STQC

awarded to 3i Infotech for their capability to develop websites as per the
guidelines in the scheme formulated by the government. This certification is the
first of its kind, among IT companies doing work in e-governance in India.
