UNITES Wields PIL Against Indian IT Cos
UNITES, a trade union established for the cause of the employees in
information technology and enabled services, has announced that it would file a
public interest litigation against the IT firms in India, which have reportedly
been enforcing long working hours on its employers. The IT firms insisted that
they have not forged the rules, as the workers have to work only forty eight
hours a week, eight hours a day for six days a week.

Akamai Technologies, an online provider of enterprise applications, has
announced the release of the third edition of its quarterly State of the
Internet report. The Akamais quarterly report provides insight into key
Internet statistics such as origin of attack traffic, network outages and
broadband connectivity levels across the globe.As per reports India ranks #20 in
terms of number of observed IP addresses with 2.6 mn connections in Q3.
e-Bay Unveils e-Com Census Guide
eBay India, an online marketplace, has unveiled the eBay India Census Guide,
designed to provide an in-depth view of the online buying and selling patterns
among Indians. The census analyzes the online behavior amongst 28 states, 6
union territories and Top 100 e-commerce cities in India. The top 5 e-commerce
hubs are Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai. Karnataka has over 195
wired location and among the category of metro cities Bangalore stands fourth.
BT Launches SD Index for India
Leading telecommunications service provider British Telecommunications Plc
(BT) has announced the launch of its Sustainable Development Indexan
assessment of business performance in India.The SD index has been developed in
partnership with GlobeScan, an independent public opinion and stakeholder
research company. The initiative was officially launched by RK Pachauri,
director general, TERI and Allen Ma, president, BT Asia Pacific at a news
conference in New Delhi.
Verizon Fires for Breaching Obamas Phone
Verizon Wireless, a provider in telecommunication services, said that it has
fired employees connected with a breach of records from a cell phone used
earlier this year by President-elect Barack Obama. According to the media
reports the company has not disclosed as to how many people were terminated.
Verizon said the fired employees were hired to take care of customers, and
were not authorized to access customer records unless asked to do so by the
customer.
Nasscom Announces Gender Inclusivity Awards
Nasscom, the premier trade body and the chamber of commerce of IT software
and a service has announced the winners of gender inclusivity awards
instituted by the organization. Infosys Technologies walked away with the award
for excellence in gender inclusivity from the IT services and product companies
sector, while IBM India bagged the award for the most innovative projects in
gender inclusivity. IBM Daksh Business Process Services emerged winner whereas
Ajuba solutions and ADP walked away with the laurels in the best emerging
company sector.
Cisco Freezes Hiring
Cisco Systems, a provider in networking services, has said that it has
frozen the hiring process. According to media reports, it plans to adopt a wait
and watch policy due to the global slowdown besides cutting costs up to $2 bn
through various means. As we have earlier said, we have a hiring freeze...
Looking at the present scenario, we will not be laying off people, Cisco
Systems, executive vice-president and chief globalization officer Wim Elfrink
said. Cisco is adopting a wait and watch policy of 6-8 weeks before taking any
