Bharat Matrimony Sues Google
Google is facing yet another lawsuit, and this time from an Indian matrimonial
portal, BharatMatrimony.com. The owner of this leading matrimony website, Consim
Info, has filed a case before the Madras High Court alleging that Google has
infringed on its trademark by displaying ads directing to its competitors. The
lawsuit filed reveals that when a user does a search for its name, Bharat
Matrimony, Google is displaying ads showcasing rival matrimony websites
including its direct competitor Shaadi.com.
Satyam pulls out of Geelong Project
Mahindra Satyam has pulled out of a $75 mn software development project at
Deakin University that was set to create 2,000 jobs in Geelong, Victoria.
According to an Australian IT report quoting Geelong Advertiser, the companys
president of corporate affairs, Sujit Baksi, informed the state government of
its intention in a letter to IT minister John Lenders. The future of the
proposed IT hub at Geelong, Southwest of Melbourne was in doubt even since the
Satyam scandal broke out.
Satyam Restores Pay of all Employees
Mahindra Satyam has announced that it has decided to restore variable pay for
all employees of the organization. This portion was suspended in April this year
following the financial scandal that saw the shares as well as the revenue of
the company nosedive. Recently, Satyam Board had approved the allotment of
1,02,566 equity shares under the companys stock option plan.
GE, SBI Wins Award
GE Capital Business Process Management Services, a joint venture company
between GE Capital and SBA won Asias Best Mature Captive Services Delivery
award from the Shared Services Outsourcing Network (SSON) at the 12th Annual
Asian Shared Services & Outsourcing week in Singapore. This is the second Asian
level award in 2009 for an SBI Card operation. Earlier this year, SBI Card was
voted as the most trusted brand in credit card category in the Readers Digest
Asia Trusted Brands 2009 Survey for the second year in a row.
MphasiS Changes Brand Identity
MphasiS, an applications services, remote infrastructure services and business
process outsourcing services provider, announced that it will change its
branding identity to become MphasiS, an HP company. The branding change is a
natural evolution and reflects MphasiS strong relationship with its majority
stakeholder and largest customer, HP. MphasiS said it continues to operate as an
independent subsidiary of HP with its own Board of directors. The company has
seen stellar growth in its revenues with the growth of its business from HP as
well as direct customers.
US Tech Industry Loses Jobs
The US technology industry cut 1,15,000 jobs in the first half of 2009,
compared to the 72,900 tech jobs added in the same period in 2008. This is 1.9%
of the workforce in the sector, according to a study by TechAmerica Foundation.
The study said the overall job loss in the US is more than 5%. From June 2008
through June 2009, tech lost 224,100 jobs, a 3.7% decline; the US private sector
shed jobs at a higher pace5.1%. It also said high-tech manufacturing continues
to shed US jobs69,500 from January to June 2009. Three services sectors saw
losses for the first time in the five-year history of this report: engineering
and tech services lost 21,500 jobs, while communications services shed 13,600
jobs.
US Immigration Agency Launches Website
In an effort to help people wanting more information about applying for
citizenship or tracking their application status, the Obama administration
launched a new website. With the launch of the revamped website, the U.S.
officials hope to make the citizenship and other immigration services more
accessible. While launching the new site, US Homeland Security Secretary Janet
Napolitano said USCIS website gets on an average of 2,30,000 visits a day and
hence it is important to make it easy to use and provide the kind of
information that people seek.
GE Extends Deal with Mahindra
Mahindra Satyam has received an extension of its multi-million dollar contract
with GE for the next three years with effect from January 1, 2010. GE, which is
among the top five customers of Mahindra Satyam for over a decade now. It is
being ably supported in the specialized areas of application development
maintenance, business intelligence and engineering services. GE has signed a
similar contract with eleven other vendors also.
US Registers High Video Viewing
comScore has released August 2009 data from the comScore video metrix service,
showing that 161 mn US Internet users watched online video during the month.
With more than 25 bn videos being viewed during the month, Google sites
accounted for more than 10 bn, and YouTube for 99% of the videos watched on
Google sites. Google attracted 121.4 mn viewers, each watching an average of 82
videos, representing 40% of all videos viewed online.
