IITD was established as Col-lege of Engineering in 1961, the Institute was later renamed Indian Institute of Technology Delhi when it became an institution of National Importance under the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963. As a deemed university IITD has the powers to decide its own academic policy, to conduct its own examinations, and to award its own degrees.

IITD has five masters programs that are fully sponsored by the industry, which means that it works closely with the industry to design, develop and then deliver the same with inputs from participating companies.

The Industrial Research and Development Unit or IRD is the institute’s front face with the industry and all of its live projects and consulting assignments are routed through it. Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer or FITT was established at IITD to be an effective interface with the industry to promote commercialization of projects that come out of the institute. The Institute has set up modern laboratories and the supporting infrastructure. The faculty of the Institute undertakes funded research to the extent of almost Rs 15 to 20 crore. Major research project activities have been undertaken in biotechnology, optical communication, microprocessor applications, signal processing, artificial intelligence and robotics.

IBM established its first Solution Research Center in IITD. IBM donated equipment worth Rs 2 crore. NIIT also established a research center called the in the form of Center for Research in Cognitive Systems in the campus. IITD has also established a similar R&D partnership with Tata Infotech.

Several laboratories have been sponsored by the industry such as Intel Technology Laboratory; Cisco sponsored Advanced Networks Laboratory; Microsoft Advanced Technology Laboratory; VLSI Design Laboratory, sponsored by Philips Semiconductors and High Performance Computer Equipment Laboratory, sponsored by IBM. Parametric Technologies, CSE Asia Pacific, and BAAN have also donated software worth Rs 2.5 crore.

IITD and Applied Materials (USA) recently entered into a collaboration agreement in the area of Integrated Circuits and Thin Film Technology. As part of this Applied Materials has donated a facility for VLSI fabrication worth approx. $2.5 million.

The institute has set up Technology Business Incubation Units (TBIU), primarily, to promote partnership with new technology entrepreneurs and start-up companies. As part of the TBIU scheme, limited modular space is provided to new entrepreneurs or technology based organizations for a limited period of time for setting up an office or a workstation or a prototyping laboratory within the premises. The objective is to promote interaction and incubate novel technology and business ideas into viable commercial products or services.

Under the TBIU scheme, two companies were inducted viz. eCapital Solutions (renamed later as Trigyn Technologies), and Infoplex Technologies to set up their R&D centers on the campus. Both these companies stayed for more than two years on IITD campus and presently are in the process to move out of TBIU.

Collaborative Programs
The Institute is actively involved in collaborative programs internationally and nationally in order to keep abreast with the scientific and technological developments. At present, a number of collaborative research projects are in operation with the institutions in Austria, France, Israel, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, UK, and USA. In order to have close cooperation in the field of teaching and research the Institute has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with foreign universities, research institutes and industrial organizations. "At any point nearly one third of the IITD faculty is engaged in an exchange program of some nature," says Prof. RS Sirohi, Director, IITD.
