Nothing in this world has been untouched by technology, and the Beijing
Olympic Games was no different. The worlds greatest and most hyped sport event
perhaps saw the best of the technology usage. Why not? It is rightly said, The
rich truly deserve the best in class. And there is no doubt that the Olympic
games are the richest in its own genre.
Olympics, which dated back to the time of the Greeks and Romans, had some use
of technology even in those days. But like never before, today even the replicas
of the Olympic torch have chips built in them. In the days that saw the origin
of this great event, Greeks used mechanical brass calculators to predict the
solar and lunar eclipses, which were in turn probably used to set the dates and
the calendar for the ancient Olympic games. But today the technology has nothing
to do with the calendars and dates at the start of the Games. If we look at the
amount of technology used in the 2008 Games, it would not just stump the ancient
greeks, but surprise even hard core techies like us. From chipsets in the torch
to unified communications, everything was put in place for the much-awaited
Olympics. Starting from the torch, it had microeletromechanical system (MEMS)
chips, definitely not the one which was taken around the world but the replicas
for the spectators. They will be able to brandish them and at the same time
spell out messages in the air. The built-in LEDs will spell out pre-loaded
messages.Avaya has provided unified communication solution to NBC Universal in
support of the network coverage for the 2008 Olympic. IP telephony surfaces as
an important tool for staying connected. A greater mobility is becoming possible
through UC at the Olympics. The new phones are being used that allow and make it
easier for the teams to switch active calls between the desk phone and cellular
device. For people who have to change locations during calls it is great news,
as with just a click on the button the call will be switched from the desk phone
to your cellular device. It also allows employees to understand and see the
status of peers in his or her work group.

One of the best parts of the Olympics is perhaps the lighting of the Olympic
flame. This time it was even more special as the cauldron that was lifted over
the stadium that has the Olympic flame, was put through the same wind tunnel
test that China uses to help design its spacecrafts. The flame is also being
maintained by engine control systems used in spacecrafts. And, the master
control uses a Shen-zoo 4000, the control system used for Chinas rocket
missions.
