Touted as one of the fastest chips it ever made, Intels recent path breaking
desktop processorCore i-series for consumer desktopsis all set to change
consumer desktop PCs power and performance. The two versions launched in
Indiathe Core i5 and i7 with superior graphical and performance
capabilitieswill usher in significant power boost to desktop PCs. The processor
is also optimized for Windows 7 and users can enjoy hi-definition video
capabilities of the new chip. Its a significant launch for both Intel as well
for the consumers in a sense that when Intel launched the Core i7 900 processors
late last year, it was only for the power users. With the launch of Core i5 700
and Core i7 800, Intel has brought the same superior performance for mainstream
consumers. The processor is code named lynnfield and is based on the Nehalem
architecture.

Reflecting on capabilities of the new processors, Srinivasan Ramaprasad
(Ram), regional marketing manager, consumer client platforms, Intel Asia Pacific
said in a meeting of APAC journalists that for users who want excellent overall
performance and scalable platform, Core i5 and i7 offers the best of both the
worlds. With this launch, Core-i processor goes mainstream, and becomes clearly
an intelligent and energy efficient option for consumers.
One of the path breaking innovations Intel has done on the Core-i series is
incorporation of its turbo mode technology. Turbo mode is a technology that
adjusts the core speeds dynamically, and depending on applications processing
requirements it will scale up and down the processing power. So this makes for
the optimal utilization of the cores based on computing power required by the
applications. This also makes the Core-i series an apt chip for multi-tasking.
According to Tim Bailey, director, marketing and consumer sales, Intel Asia
Pacific they are confident on the rapid adoption of Core-i processors, as it
comes at a time when in Asia PC technologies are almost three years old, and
consumers will be more than willing to migrate to a processor with superior
computing capabilities.
Prakash Bagri, director, marketing, Intel South Asia says that with the
launch of new Core i5 and Core i7 series of processors, they are extending the
path breaking Nehalem micro architecture for mainstream PC users. This is
coupled with revolutionary changes in chipset design, thus delivering great new
levels of performance and scalability. Ultimately, it allows discerning users to
get previously unheard levels of intelligent performance on their Desktop PCs.

With Intel pitching its Core chips on the i series as the future; it is also
expected to reorient its branding structure. While in short term, versions of
Core 2 Duo will exist, but in the long run, it will be aligning its entire chip
portfolio on the Core series going forward. The OND quarter usually is a
significant quarter for the PC industry. While OND 2008 was very bad due to
recession, analysts are predicting far more benign OND 2009. This will be good
for Intels Core-i chips, which will leverage the anticipated positive economic
outlook. With the Core-i chip, Intel has also infused fresh blood in the
consumer desktop market with a processor that will revive the sagging fortune of
the desktop PC market.
