The retail giant ITC's leadership in IT implementation is visible in its
strategic deployment of IT to cover virtually everything: from supply chain
management and sales and inventory management to scientific/statistical models
based procurement and processing of tobacco leaf; from CRM for agri-business to
anywhere, anytime access to IT applications.
The company has gained significantly in its operations by bringing down the
lead time involved in the shipment process for finished goods from 48 hours to
on-demand basis.
The company has evolved new methods to utilize IT to improve farm gate
productivity and price realizations, and thus, farmers' income levels. It has
also done the integration of ERP with handheld terminals and wireless
technologies to acquire product traceability for quality improvements in the
procurement and processing of tobacco leaves. Also its development and
implementation of handheld terminals with Wi-Fi at the tobacco auction platforms
for the leaf tobacco business to enable on-line information availability is
remarkable.

Best Advocate Award |
In order to meet the business need of capturing procurement transactions of
leaf tobacco across 70 rural locations, the company decided to implement a
solution using handheld terminals with Wi-Fi. This was a risky proposition
considering the lack of wide area connectivity, lack of education, handling of
expensive equipment by field staff. But at the same time, this deployment has
also helped reduce the load on the head clerk at the aggregating godown who
earlier had to enter over 3,000 records a day. The new implementation has made
possible the instant, error-free reconciliation of stocks. VVR Babu, CIO of ITC,
bags a very well-deserved Best Advocate Award.
