With the implementation of its different IT initiatives, Hindalco has been able to see impact in manufacturing with its cycle time coming down from 23.2 days (base level) to 11-13 days, the lowest achieved being 10 days. In the area of procurement, the company was able to save on capital cost upto Rs 46.5 lakh through online reverse auctioning. In the area of sales, the company had an improvement in working capital due to reduction in finished goods inventory at 9% by Rs 1.06 crore.

By deploying asynchronous mode communication over satellite channel to connect all business units, zonal offices and godown at a cost 30% of the bandwidth tariffs applicable to other technologies-the company saved Rs 39.5 lakh per annum. It was among the first to use the high bandwidth at high capital risk in the event of failure. The use of asymmetric bandwidth utilizes the bandwidth much more effectively on account of user-specified in route and out route and frequency optimization.

Sanjeev Goel,
CIO, Hindalco
Pioneer Award

Hindalco had to get 70 key users as change managers and change drivers for the implementation of ERP and CRM modules which involved training of over 2000 users on ERP across 20 different locations. The company had to deal with the initial resistance to change as well as fear of losing jobs if the project went off successfully. It required the company to handle the above issues as well introduce team work and a learning culture and sharing of best practices and do and don'ts. The company created online eLearning modules through its knowledge management portal called AdityaDisha. The courses are self managed and employees can track their progress.

By implementing a vehicle tracking system using VI eTrans, which is a cost effective solution over the other alternatives that use GSM/GPS/RF technologies, the company was able to provide the same information to owner, transport company, consignor and consignee. It also resulted in increased service level to customers, improved vehicle planning to transporters, inventory planning to consignors and consignees, and warehouse planning to all. This gives realtime status of vehicles every 150 kms across India.

Lastly, Hindalco identified a total of 319 processes with 1243 sub processes under finance, sales, manufacturing, maintenance, materials. It completed the largest Oracle applications implementation in India in terms of complexity, user base and application foot print. No surprises therefore, that CIO Sanjeev Goel was awarded the Pioneer Award.
