SRL Ranbaxy is one of the country's premier diagnostic research and clinical reference laboratories, specializing in developing and providing diagnostic, prognostic and monitoring tests and services to doctors and patients. It has deployed IT (Lab Management Software (LMS)-ERP) and successfully managed to reduce inventory on expensive materials used for testing, which come with expiry dates. The company was also successful in creating customer confidence and avoiding unnecessary panic in the market by ensuring there were no stock-outs of essential raw materials.

The company also has an effective method for measuring performance through a system of result reporting, sample registering, etc. This system sorts figures by, for instance, percentage of reports sent electronically against those by courier, samples registered remotely versus via manual registration, etc. IT deployment is aligned closely with the company's business, and its mandate of removing the barrier of distant labs, improving turnaround time on lab reports-the labs processes more than 3000 patient samples, comprising 10,000 tests-in a day, reducing inventory and stock piling, and improving collections.

Radhakrishna Pillai,  CIO, SRL Ranbaxy Extended Management Award

By forward and backward integration with LMS, the company was able to connect its franchise, sales team and customers. With the ccnet, the company enabled its customers (hospitals, other pathology labs/clinic) to place orders for a test and get related information (price, test details, test run schedule, etc). With ccom, the company connected its doctors, patients and its sales team, enabling them to access information relating to sales details, clients' outstanding dues, payment details, etc. ccnet is a remarkable achievement as the people manning the collection centers were not computer literate. Similarly, ccom had to overcome its sales team's initial fear of policing by the company. CIO Radhakrishna Pillai wins a hard-earned award in the Extended Management category.
