As in the past twelve years, a distinguished Panel debated on and selected
the Dataquest Awardees.
And following tradition, the previous year's man of the year, Nasscom
president Kiran Karnik, chaired the Panel meeting held at Delhi, on September 1,
2006.
The Panel included IIIT-B Founder Director Professor S Sadagopan, Redington
India CEO Jitendra Kulkarni, DIT Additional Secretary R Chandrashekhar, Moser
Baer CMD Deepak Puri, Nasscom President Kiran Karnik, Cyber Media Publications
Editor-in-Chief Shyam Malhotra, Cyber Media CMD Pradeep Gupta and Maruti Udyog
CIO Rajesh Uppal, facilitated by Dataquest group chief editor Prasanto K Roy.
Nominations were sought from panelists, editors and industry persons. The
first round of deliberations on the nominations happened over e-mail, followed
by the Panel meet in Mumbai. The Panel was supported by research from the
Dataquest editorial team.

Parameters for Nominations |
- The nominee should have been
associated with the IT industry for a reasonable period of time
- The nominee should have been the head
of an organization or the leader of an organization
- The nominee should have contributed
directly or indirectly to the general growth and development of the
Indian IT industry
- The nominee should have ensured
beneficial growth of his or her organization
- The nominee should be regarded for the
highest standards of ethics and responsible conduct
- If the nominee has already been
awarded IT Person of the Year, he/she cannot be considered for the
award for the next three years

A discussion and elimination process helped cutdown the list of a dozen odd
names. New names were added and debated upon as per the jury process. The next
round dwelt on the achievements of each contender: track record in recent years,
contributions to the company and to society.
After much discussion and deliberation, the panel unanimously named Nandan
Nilekani, CEO & MD, Infosys Technologies as the IT Person of the Year 2006.
Flextronics Software Systems President & MD Arun Kumar was confered the
Lifetime Achievement Award posthumously. MCA 21 project of Ministry of Company
Affairs was selected for the year's Pathbreaker Award for its impact in
