Hutch and Microsoft Announce Mobile Search Alliance
Hutchison Essar and Microsoft Corp. have jointly announced a broad scale
mobile services alliance in India. Together, they will provide mobile search and
other Windows Live services to Hutch's subscriber base of over 21 mn. Some of
the Windows Live services being offered include Windows Live Messenger, Windows
Live Mail and Windows Live Spaces.
Upon completion of the alliance, Hutch customers in India
will be able to search for and access mobile content and information in a
one-stop integrated search powered by Windows Live Search for mobile –
including news, sports, entertainment information and more directly from the
World Wide Web.
"With India being the fastest growing mobile market in
the world, providing a rich set of online services for mobile subscribers is
more important than ever," said Steve Ballmer, CEO, Microsoft, during his
trip to New Delhi. Under the current partnership, Microsoft powers Hutch's
mobile portal 'PlanetHutch' and has built and manages Hutch's Fun Cards
platform.

News on M-Paper
Cellnext Solutions has introduced the Multimedia-Paper (M-Paper)
application. M-Paper not only provides the headline of the story, but also
a full-fledged newspaper containing the entire content available in the
hard copy. Launched with Idea Cellular first, the M-Paper service will be
commercially launched with other telecos in a month's time across the
country.
Linksys ships 25 mn Wireless
Routers
Linksys, a division of Cisco Systems, has announced that it has shipped
more than 25 mn wireless routers since the company launched its first
wireless router in January 2001. Today the company ships nearly 1 mn
wireless routers worldwide on a monthly basis.
BSNL's Location-based
Services
BSNL has offered its mobile subscribers location-based services that
enable the subscribers to track buddies, locate resources on map and make
new friends through location-based chatting service. BSNL statement said
that it is the first operator in India to launch such type of
location-based services.
Motorola Opens R&D in
Hyderabad
Motorola has opened its new R&D center in Hyderabad with an investment
of close to Rs 60 crore. The facility will accommodate more than 1,000
engineers. Apart from working on WiMax, network management and autonomics,
security and high availability platforms the center will carry out R&D
activities on cutting edge software for intelligent user interface used in
Motorola phones.
Nokia Bags $400 mn Airtel
Contract
Bharti Airtel has awarded Nokia an estimated $400 mn three-year contract
to expand its managed GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks in eight Airtel circles and
deploy a pan-Indian WAP solution across its networks. Nokia will also
deploy its WAP solution across Airtel's national network to enhance the
operator's mobile packet core network capabilities.
Megasoft Inks $1 mn Deal
Megasoft has bagged over US $1 mn deal from Teletalk Bangladesh for a
suite of mobile services. The agreement involves enhancing roaming
services in Bangladesh's nascent mobile market. The range of services to
be provided by Megasoft under the deal, include SMS Auto Correct,
PowerRoam, SmartRoute, Welcome Notification, InstaRoam, SMS aggregation
and others. |
According to Asim Ghosh, MD, Hutchison, "The Mobile
Internet is the way forward for the Internet and in this area, we have had a
wonderful relationship with Microsoft over the years. We were the first to
launch MSN Messenger and Hotmail on mobile phones in India." "It is
terrific to be extending this relationship to help provide the entire Windows
Live suite to our customers with a great search engine," he further added.
"Hutch's leadership in the expanding mobile data
services sector coupled with the breadth and innovation offered by Microsoft's
Windows Live services, means this alliance is well positioned to accelerate the
Indian mobile Internet market," says Ravi Venkatesan, Chairman, Microsoft
India.
Sybase Completes Acquisition of Mobile 365
Leading enterprise infrastructure and mobile software provider, Sybase has
announced completion of its acquisition of Mobile 365 in an all-cash transaction
valued at $417 mn. Mobile 365 will now operate as Sybase 365, a wholly owned
subsidiary, led by Marty Beard, senior VP of corporate development and marketing
for Sybase. He will lead the new subsidiary as President.
The Sybase mFolio business and some assets of Sybase AvantGo
will be integrated into Sybase 365 early in 2007. According to John Chen, Sybase
chairman, CEO and president, "Our acquisition of Mobile 365 is strategic,
visionary and progressive in scope".
Sybase 365 operates in mobile interoperator messaging,
including SMS, MMS and IMS, delivering more than 3.5 bn messages per month. With
this acquisition Sybase has been able to expand its Unwired Enterprise offerings
and to deliver information anytime, anywhere and to any type of device.
Through its extensive network of approximately 700 mobile
operators, including Verizon Wireless, Vodafone, T-Mobile, Cingular, Telefonica
and China Mobile, Sybase 365 will continue to focus on enabling companies like
Citibank, Yahoo, AOL, MSN and Twentieth Century Fox to mobilize their content
and applications.
According to Beard, "The acquisition solidly positions
Sybase between mobile operators, content providers, and global brands, further
extending our worldwide leadership in enterprise mobility."
SecureClient Mobile for Windows Mobile Devices
Security solutions provider, Check Point has announced the availability of
its new mobile security solution, SecureClient Mobile, for Windows mobile
powered devices. The solution gives Windows Mobile device users secure and
uninterrupted remote access to enterprise e-mail and critical business
applications.
SecureClient maintains continuous and transparent VPN
connectivity with Check Point VPN-1 and Connectra gateways when roaming across
networks, and eliminates the need for end users to re-authenticate. The solution
incorporates features like location-independent network access, enhanced device
security, advanced roaming, automatic data delivery, and centralized management
and policy control.
According to Samir Kumar, senior product planner at
Microsoft, "VPN transition between cellular data networks and Wi-Fi
networks will be increasingly critical to user productivity and security as
access to more and more business applications are extended to mobile devices.
Check Point offers a powerful security option for customers running Windows
Mobile-powered devices."
According to Rich Weiss, director of product marketing at
Check Point Software Technologies, SecureClient allows IT managers to quickly
and easily extend their critical applications to mobile devices and brings
secure remote access for a broad range of endpoints under unified management.
"With uninterrupted connectivity, easy agent deployment and efficient
centralized management, SecureClient complements existing Windows Mobile
technology and our OPSEC partners' applications to support today's mobile
workforce," he adds.
The pricing for SecureClient Mobile is based on the number of licenses with
US $40 per client for a 1,000 user perpetual license, and is available
immediately for all Microsoft Windows Mobile Pocket PC 2003/SE and Windows
