6.9 mn Mobile and Fixed WiMax Connections in India

Gartner estimates 6.9 mn mobile and fixed WiMax connections in India by the end of 2011. As per the research and advisory firm, the Indian WiMax market is not very promising in the near future. It is expected that India will remain a niche market for WiMax till 2009. As mobile frequencies will not be available in the short term, it does not expect mobile WiMax rollouts to be available at larger scales before 2009. As a result, most of the WiMax connections in the short and mid-term will be for nomadic or fixed wireless applications.

The country-specific mobile broadband framework makes the nationwide rollout of WiMax cost prohibitive. Also, given the low levels of PC penetration in India, there will be a limited demand for WiMax. Hence, in the near term, WiMax is still a niche technology and limited to enterprise and high-end residential users in urban India.

The potential of the Indian WiMax market in the long term will depend on factors like spectrum allocation, maturity of the WiMax ecosystem, and the timeliness of WiMax and 3G licenses.
