India to Lead IBMs Mobile Web Services Research
At the tenth anniversary commemoration of IBMs India Research Lab, the company launched its Mobile Web initiative. The new IBM research program will entail a number of efforts to bring simple, easy to use services to the millions of people in the world who have bypassed using the personal computer as their primary method of accessing technology, and are instead using their mobile phone. As part of the Mobile Web initiative, IBM is making major investments in mobile software and hardware platforms and has opened several worldwide telecom solutions labs focused on research and development.

The projects are also are being incubated in IBMs eight global labs in six countries. These projects include: the Spoken Webvoice-enabled mobile commerce; Instant Translationreal time communication between multiple languages through mobile devices; SoulPadenabling any portable device to carry your computing application in the pocket; BuddyCommsocial networking on-the-go; Good Samaritanmobile healthcare information made available in any emergency situation.

STMicroelectronics, NXP Merge Wireless Businesses
NXP and STMicroelectronics have announced their agreement to combine key wireless operations to form a joint-venture company. The new company will have the scale to better meet customer needs in 2G, 2.5G, 3G, multimedia, connectivity and all future wireless technologies. The combined venture will be created from successful businesses that together generated $3 bn in revenue in 2007 and will own thousands of important communication and multimedia patents.

Combining complementary organizations and portfolios will improve competitiveness, speed product development and strengthen R&D scale. The new organization will combine key design, sales and marketing, and back-end manufacturing assets from both companies into a streamlined worldwide joint venture that will rely on its parent companies and foundries for wafer fabrication services. This new leading player will be well positioned with all the vital technologies for UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System); for the emerging 3G Chinese standard; as well as other cellular, multimedia and connectivity capabilities including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, FM Radio, USB, and UWB (Ultra-wideband). The JV will also integrate the Silicon Laboratories wireless and GloNavs GPS operations recently acquired by NXP.

Sybase Intros Security for Symbian Devices
Sybase iAnywhere has announced that its Information Anywhere Suite Afaria component, which provides leading-edge mobile device management and security capabilities, now supports the latest mobile devices based on the Symbian platform. A company press release said that Sybase iAnywhere provides robust management capabilities combined with a policy-based, managed security solution to ensure central IT control of Symbian devices. Appealing to the mixed device environments of many global organizations, companies can leverage Afaria to manage and secure a range of mobile devices based on Windows Mobile, Palm and now Symbian handhelds, and Windows laptops. With the rise in popularity of Symbian OS handhelds for enterprise use, it is critical for companies to be able to centrally control, back up and secure these devices used by mobile workers, says Joe Owen, vice president of Engineering, Sybase iAnywhere.

HTC P3470 in India
HTC has launched HTC P3470 in India. Combining a lightweight design, large screen, navigation wheel, and macro lens, the P3470 sets a new standard in affordable smartphone coupled with GPS-based devices. The HTC P3470 is one of the most compact devices in HTCs portfolio. The HTC P3470 enables an easy to use and simple interface for accessing Web pages, documents, messages, contact lists and more.

Jataayu Solutions on ASUS Devices
ASUS along with Jataayu Software has announced that it will be offering Jataayus mobile multimedia messaging solution on a complete range of mobile devices based on the Windows Mobile platform. ASUS has already launched several smartphones and PDA phones with Jataayus MMS Client in the market. Along with providing the application, Jataayu will also work closely with ASUS to enhance the UI and support them with new features and interoperability. Jataayus MMS Client, requiring minimal integration effort, ensures the fastest time-to-market for the ASUS Smartphones and PPCs.

Cricinfo Launches Mobicast for iPhone
Cricinfo has announced the launch of Cricinfo Mobicast for Apples cult handheld device, iPhone. Mobicast is the first full-fledged cricket widget for iPhone. iPhone users will now have access to Cricinfos famous, live, ball-by-ball updates, scorecard, match schedules, news, photos as well as podcasts from experts like Ian Chappell, Tony Greig, and Geoff Boycott. The Mobicast widget will automatically update, eliminating the need for constant Web page refreshes and long waits. The iPhone Mobicast widget offers a very intuitive experience to cricket fans.

CSR Launches Handsfree Bluetooth
CSR has announced the launch of RoadTunes, a feature rich, fully interoperable Bluetooth handsfree package for personal navigation devices (PNDs) and in-car systems. RoadTunes boasts a less than six-week average integration time and is available at $6. The CSRs example design features full hardware and software components, including source code to allow designers to fully customize their end designs. Based on CSRs market leading BlueCore5-Multimedia silicon, RoadTunes is a low power, fully interoperable design with a powerful RISC and DSP processor.

The design incorporates both CSR Clear Voice Capture (CVC) and third party echo cancellation technologies. BlueCore5-Multimedia also features Bluetooth v2.1 for simple pairing and best in class audio CODEC with a signal to noise ratio of -95dB.
