‘Sales and service’ image

Playing on the length and breadth grid, HCL Insys is propelling its course on to the high-growth path of ‘Information-Enabling’. In Year 2002-03, we saw the reorganization and consolidation of its hardware and services businesses. In a bid to enhance its brand image, HCL Insys adopted a new media and advertising policy, and started offering value-added services in areas like SAP implementation, software applications, networking consultancy and management of hardware solutions—from simple PCs to high-end servers. In the final tally, it managed to notch up higher numbers—thanks in large to its ringing business for Nokia. The retail business for Toshiba products was also fueled up with the e-Studios. Another key focus area—efforts to offer integrated solutions for customers.

HCLI tapped traditional vertical segments of telecom, manufacturing, finance & banking, government, utilities and transportation. There was also a thrust on software exports, though this dipped from 12% to 8%, though significant projects for SAP implementation projects were accrued. On the PC segment, HCL gave good competition to MNC brands and came home the winner. It was the home segment that was hot for the PC business in 2002-03, and HCLI revamped the Beanstalk line and breached the Rs 25,000-price barrier for its home PCs. The Tablet PC was one of the biggest launches, followed by a mass mailing product—Pitney Powes.

Ramping up of its SSO capabilities in supporting installation types ranging from single to large, multi-location, multi-platform mission critical orders moved along too. The SSO now has a direct support force of over 1,600-plus members in 165 locations across the country. SSO also has a training center in Hyderabad.

Having focussed strongly on the copier business, HCL it won Toshiba’s ‘Outstanding Sales and Marketing Award in APAC’, plus one for the highest growth in laptop sales. Its manufacturing facilities received ISO 14001 certification for environmental management systems and MAIT awarded it Level 2 colors for manufacturing and support. The company’s focus now—to position its brand as a preferred hardware vendor with a best-of-breed product array.
