Sun Microsystems: Unhappy But Loyal

Sun Microsystems should really do something about its work culture. Specially, because of the uniquely loyal workforce it seems to have. The company cleaned up its HR hygiene factors somewhat last year with improved training and salary hikes and the workforce responded immediately with much higher satisfaction on both counts.

More importantly, despite very low ranks on key employee satisfaction parameters like company culture, job content, appraisal systems and people, employees still had interesting responses on some key questions. They voted Sun in at #2 on the preferred employer rankings with 56% of its own employees naming it their dream company; 91% feel pride in saying they work for Sun (Ranked 2nd) and 69% said they would not leave the company for a 20% hike in salary (Ranked 5th). Despite all this employees are low on excitement at work, don't feel very secure in their jobs, don't like the appraisal system much and are unhappy with their immediate managers.
